The Quest
So what makes a good song, a good song? Is it the melody? Lyrics? Rhythm? Do good memories associated with a song make it great? And so begins my adventure to find the 20 greatest songs I've ever heard.
I wanted to be careful with this project. I was worried that I might run through a phase, and accidently put a polka-shuffle hop song on my list because I was in the mood for it one day. These songs need to be able to stand the test of time.
First, I wanted to explore lyrics. I think I've come to the conclusion that while they undoubtedly contribute to a songs appeal, they are not necessary for a song to be great. Some musical styles, like Jazz, techno, and industrial metal do not rely on lyrics to complete a song. Alternately, some songs rely entirely on they're lyrics. For example most punk-rock, modern-rock, classic-rock, post-modern-grunge-rock, and any other kind of rock, can be played with about 4 chords. The only thing that really separates one rock song from another is the lyrics. (even then sometimes the difference is marginal.) Then there are the bands that sing... but you can't really tell that's what they're doing. Like Killswitch Engage.
And sometimes, you find a song that you listen to a hundred times before you realize what the song is actually about. A pristine example of this is the song Widow's Peak written by Chris Carrabba, frontman for Dashboard Confessional. At first it sounds like another love song about a couple breaking up and getting back together again. On a closer listen though, I realized he was not singing about broken love, but rather Hurricane Katrina. As soon as I realized this, the lyrics became infinitely more meaningful and powerful.

The First Post
I love to discover new things, so this blog is gonna all be about things I've come across. New songs, artists, places, videos, places to climb, places to longboard and so on.
Today. I had eggs and strawberry banana juice and listened to John Mayer.
I also came across an artist named Missy Higgins. She's an aussie sounding a little bit like Colby Calliat... and jack johnson... take a listen| Missy Higgins - Scar | ||

So several months ago I came across the song Paper Planes by M.I.A.

Now, while browsing last.fm I was horrified to see it with something like 40,000 "digg-its" or "love-its" or whatever they call those little thumbs up things next to a song that people click to associate themselves with something popular thus becoming "neato" themselves.
I don't know why this upsets me so much, but it does! 11 year-old white girls shouldn't dance around their rooms rockin out to "Apple bottom jeans" or "Smack That" just because it was on iTunes top 10.
Then I went to youtube to check out the music video. It had 9.5 million views. So I gave in 9.5 million and one. Well, almost one. I stopped half-way through. M.I.A is a rather unfortunate looking woman and a minute was about as much as I could stand.
SPEAKING OF UNFORTUNATE LOOKING WOMEN! HA! I was watching the Olympics the other day, female weight lifting, and was stricken with an emotion I call "horrified fascination" like an old man in a banana colored speedo. Its awful beyond words, but you just. can't. stop. looking. Anyway these weight lifters... actually I will stop. If they ever find this they may just come and sit on me, splintering the rest of my already injured ribs. Here is the new record holder.
